Why "First Fridays" ?
Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque was born in France on July 22nd, 1647; made final vows as a nun of the Visitation order in November of 1672, and died on October 17th, 1690. In March of 1824, Pope Leo XII pronounced her Venerable, and in September of 1864, Pope Pius IX declared her Blessed. She was canonized by Pope Benedict XV on May 13, 1920. Pope Benedict chose to insert the list of Christ's twelve promises in it's entirety in the Bull of Canonization of Saint Margaret Mary indicating his endorsement of the Communions of Reparation in honor of the Sacred Heart on nine consecutive First Fridays. Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque's feast day is October 17th. Our Lord appeared frequently to St. Margaret Mary and revealed the devotions to His Sacred Heart. The most special apparitions took place between 1673 and 1675 and in 1688. The revelations took place as St. Margaret was praying before the Blessed Sacrament and Our Lord revealed all the love that is enclosed in His Sacred Heart for humanity. He requested her to receive Him in Holy Communion of the first Friday of every month and to meditate the passion on Thursdays between 11am and noon. "And He showed me that it was His great desire of being loved by men and of withdrawing them from the path of ruin into which Satan hurls such crowds of them, that made Him form the design of manifesting His Heart to men." "...We should honor the Sacred Heart of Jesus by doing this devotion for 9 consecutive Fridays and then by attending Holy Communion as often as possible, daily if our gift is such, we must enthrone an image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in our homes as Our King and also an image of the Immaculate Heart of Mary our Mother and Queen." More information on Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque is available at http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/09653a.htm We should also practice the Five First Saturdays devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary as Our Lady has requested through Sister Lucia of Fatima.
